Getting into rapport is the very first step for all of this.<strong>\u00a0All other skills and leadership techniques do not work or are much weaker without the presence of good rapport.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This state of &#8220;being in sync&#8221; occurs naturally between people who like each other or are similar to one another<\/strong>. But what about the people whom we don\u00b4t immediately fall in love with, people different from us in one way or another? Is building a connection with them impossible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Throughout history, leaders often gained their biggest learning with help from unlikely sources \u2013 people who are \u201cnothing like them\u201d.<\/strong>\u00a0However how often does one consciously seek to \u201cconsult unlikely sources\u201d for advice or information?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When our well-honed skills and strategies bring us success, we tend to celebrate them and get firmly set in our ways. We learn that \u201chow we do things\u201d works well, we build our box and fill it with tools, techniques and behaviours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In business and life, however, it is not wise to \u201cget stuck in our box\u201d, often what we need to keep moving forth are fresh perspectives.\u00a0<strong>To \u201cseek outside the box\u201d is necessary to find creative solutions, which can\u00b4t be found \u201cwithin the box\u201d.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>And wouldn\u00b4t you agree that the life of a leader requires being able to come up with creative solutions on daily basis?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/inspiraconsulting.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Box_Cover-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1037\" width=\"499\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"http:\/\/inspiraconsulting.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Box_Cover-1.jpg 770w, http:\/\/inspiraconsulting.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Box_Cover-1-300x156.jpg 300w, http:\/\/inspiraconsulting.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Box_Cover-1-768x399.jpg 768w, http:\/\/inspiraconsulting.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Box_Cover-1-60x31.jpg 60w, http:\/\/inspiraconsulting.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Box_Cover-1-700x364.jpg 700w, http:\/\/inspiraconsulting.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Box_Cover-1-600x312.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>What better way is there for getting \u201cout of our box\u201d than to build connections with people who aren\u00b4t like us? People with different experiences, different backgrounds and different ways of looking at life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some techniques and skills can help us build rapport almost instantly, but it\u00b4s important to keep in mind <strong>people are naturally good at sniffing out insincere leaders<\/strong>. If you are about to try building rapport for phoney reasons, it&#8217;s more than likely the other side will detect this (at least unconsciously) and the strength of rapport will suffer significantly. We may even go as far as to say, that a feeling of\u00a0<strong>genuine curiosity<\/strong>\u00a0about the other person\u00a0<strong>and an honest wish to build a connection<\/strong>\u00a0is the basis for good rapport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays, the<strong>\u00a0workplace is filled with daily challenges<\/strong>, unique to our industries,<strong>\u00a0and it\u00b4s no longer only management responding to them. We need our ground floor teams to adequately respond and come up with creative solutions\u00a0<\/strong>as opposed to mindlessly repeating pre-set tasks.<strong>\u00a0Motivated people are far more likely to do this well, increasing chances for success.<\/strong>\u00a0Establishing a state of rapport is an essential first step to effectively engaging and motivating individuals and teams. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u00b4s however not confuse rapport for agreement; we can agree but not have rapport and the other way around. Rapport also isn\u00b4t sympathy, rapport doesn\u2019t need us to sympathize with the other person but rather to empathize. We can be in rapport with people we disagree with on a deep personal level and at the same time, rapport can be lacking sometimes in people who have sympathy for one another.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can we support the building of rapport? \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul type=\"1\"><li><strong>Admit to yourself you \u201cdon\u00b4t and can\u00b4t ever know everything about everything&#8221;: <\/strong>approaching people from this mindset allows you to remain humble and genuinely curious about the other person, their expertise, experience and all the things they \u201cbring to the table\u201d. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Smile: <\/strong>positive face invites connections.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Ask:<\/strong>&nbsp;take 2-3 minutes to chat with your people about topics unrelated to work. Ask open-ended questions about their likes, dislikes, needs and desires to open a dialogue.&nbsp;<strong>This practice shows you pay attention to them and take them for more than just an \u201cemployee who works\u201d.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Listen: good listeners connect instantly.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Listening with the goal of understanding, not replying takes practice but it certainly pays off. \u00a0A good start for this practice is to try to fully focus on the person and their words and take 2-3 seconds to think before you reply.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Paraphrase, repeat &amp; ask if you got it right: <\/strong>not only does this allow you to make sure you understood the other person correctly, it also proves you are truly listening and curious about their point of view.<strong> &nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Empathize:\u00a0<\/strong>empathy is about the willingness to look at things from a different angle and recognise emotions. Remember,\u00a0<strong>empathy can happen without sympathy, it is not about agreeing with someone, it\u00b4s about \u201ewalking a\u00a0mile in their shoes\u201c.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Get in sync:\u00a0<\/strong>synchronize with people by discreetly mirroring and matching their speech patterns, vocal behaviour, breath tempo, gestures and body language. Subtle mimicry is a form of flattery and drives instant rapport. Subtle being the keyword here \ud83d\ude0a<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What about you?
